1 samuel - David - BIBLE SUMMARY WITH ART

 Hannah was barren and prayed for a son in the presence of high priest Eli,  God granted her wish and she dedicated her young son Samuel to the Lord under priest Eli.

Hannah gives thanks to the Lord in prayer, then Eli and an unnamed man of God both rebuke Eli's  two wicked sons Phinehas and  Hophni for treating the offering of God with contempt.

 Young Samuel is repeatedly awakened by a call one night, he thought it was Eli, but it was the Lord calling, this is confirmed by Eli, grown Samuel is recognized by the people as God's prophet.

Israel is defeated in battle  by the Philistines  so they try to use the presence of the ark to ensure victory this results in losing the ark to the Philistines, Eli and his sons are killed as judgment for sins.

 The Philistine god Dagon falls repeatedly next to the ark and all the people of this area are struck with tumors and confusion. 

The Philistines send the ark back unmanned using cows with extra gold offerings in appeasement, an altar is made out of the cart,  many Israelites are also killed for improperly handling ark. 

  Samuel gathers Israel at Mizpah and commands them to remove idols, God thunders against the Philistines in war, Samuel sets commemorative  Ebenezer stone.

The people ask Samuel for a king "like the other nations", this dissapoints Samuel who warns people, God tells Samuel to listen to people and appoint them their king.

  Saul is introduced tall and handsome he searches for his fathers lost donkeys  God tells Samuel this is the people's king,  Saul meets and eats with Samuel.

  Saul is annointed by Samuel then introduced in a gathering of the people at Mizpah with signs and a procession of prophets.

 Saul musters the people to rescue the men of Jabesh scattering the Ammorites who had threatened eye gouging, Saul is confirmed as king.

  Samuel address the people and recounts God's mighty works in Egypt how the people forget and do evil repeatedly and warns against doing this again.

 Saul is rebuked and his days are numbered by Samuel for offering improper burnt offering (without Samuel) as his men were scattered fighting Philistines, the Philistines had outlawed weapons.

  Led by God Jonathan leads great victory over Philistines,  Saul makes rash fasting vow to kill any who eat and then recounts after Jonathan confesses eating honey.

  Samuel tells Saul to destroy the Amalakites , Saul fears the people and only partially does, God tells Samuel to remove Saul as king and Samuel hacks up king Agag in judgment .

 God sends Samuel to secretly annoint a new king from Jessie's sons God chooses the smallest and youngest David, David plays harp occasionally to sooth tormented King Saul.

  Young boy David accepts giant warrior Goliath's  man to man death match challenge while bringing food to his brothers, he trusts God's plan and kills Goliath for Saul.

  Saul feels threatened by David, his son Jonathan loves David, Saul throws spear at David then offers daughter for Philistine victory hoping to kill David

 Jonathan and Michal (Saul's daughter / David's wife) help save David from his father Saul , Saul send's several messengers to take David in Ramah all then prophesied (improperly) including Saul himself (naked).

Jonathan vows to protect David, he uses arrows to signal safety from father king Saul, Saul is angry with Jonathan for choosing David over himself (his royal kingly line).

  David eats consecrated bread from priest Ahimelech on the run from Saul and takes Goliath's sword  he continues to flee and acts mad out of  fear of Gath king Achish.

  David is pursuited by Saul who orders  Ahimelek and all priests of Tob to be  slaughtered for aiding David  (only Doeg complies Saul's other guards refuse order), a son Abiathar escapes to David's protection.

 David delivers people of Keilah against Philistines, Saul pursuits David there and several other places in spite of his son's Jonathan aid, they make a covenant before the Lord.

  David cuts the edge of Saul's robe (feels guilty for touching God's annointed) and calls out to Saul to end pursuit, Saul admits sin weeps and heads home,  David vows to preserve Saul's family.

  Samuel dies then Abigail intercedes to  save evil husband Nabal for not honoring David, Nabal is struck dead for dishonor and David marries Abigail.

 David and his men sneak into Saul's sleeping  camp while being pursued, David refuses to kill Saul (God's annointed), He takes spear and jug and shouts from distance to expose Saul's sin.

  David and  his men move into Ziklag with the Philistines to escape Saul, they would raid neighboring enemies but then tell Philistine king Achish they were raiding others in Judah. 

  Saul visits a medium at Endor because God no longer talks to him,  dead Samuel appears who tells Saul that he will die tomorrow.  

  The Philistines and Israelites square off for battle in the Jezreel valley, the  Philistine lords tell King Achish they distrust David (then allied with Philistines) so he leaves.   

  David returns to find Ziklag burned and plundered by the Amalekites, David pursues and conquers them and spreads the spoil.

The Amalekite trying to gain David's favor is slain by David for admitting  the mercy killing of Saul (God's annointed), David then writes poetic tribute to Jonathan & Saul.

Wars break out between those loyal to David (Joab) and the rest of Israel loyal to Saul's house (Abner), Abner kills speedy pursuer Asahel (Joab's brother).

Abner speaks for tribes and agrees to peace terms with David including Sauls's daughter  Michal but Joab privately kills Abner over brother Asahel, David mourns. 

 Men loyal to Saul kill Saul's son Ish-bosheth trying to gain David's favor they are reminded of Amalekite and killed by David as example.

 David's kingdom  prospers is consolidated and recognized by all of Israel, he captures Zion (city of David) and twice seeks God's guidance in conquering Philistines. 

 Uzzah is struck dead for improperly touching ark being moved , David becomes fearful  then brings ark to Jerusalem and celebrates before God, his wife Michal doesn't approve.

 David desires to build  temple,  God promises David (through Nathan) that someone from his line will rule Israel justly for eternity.

 David's kingdom expands through conquest rapidly he dedicates gold and victories to the Lord and rules justly.

David seeks someone from Saul and Jonathan's house to show God's kindness to, he finds lame Mephibosheth and restores him to sup with king.  

 Led by the Ammorites several of the neighboring nations disrespect and conspire against David's kingdom,  led by Joab and Abishai they are conquered.

 David  sees, takes and impregnates Bathsheba  (wife of loyal soldier Urriah) in adultery and tries to cover his tracks and finally has him killed.

 Prophet Nathan confronts David for Bathsheba sin, David fasts over sick son who then dies, Joab conquers Ammon for David. 

 Amnon tricks and rapes Tamar this angers Absolom (all 3 are David's offspring) who conspires and kills Amnon later for revenge

 Joab has Tekoa woman make up widow's  story that warms David's heart in order to reconcile with banished Absalom for killing Amnon.

 Absalom and his men conspire to  become king of Hebron, David flees Jerusalem in repsonse but sends the ark,  priest, and key spies back to Jerusalem.

 David is heckled and cursed by Shimei (Saul's family) as he retreats from Jerusalem, Absalom enters David's concubines in view of people following  Ahithophel's advice.

 Absalom follows the advice of Hushai (David's spy) over Ahithophel about pursuing David, this allows warning to save David.

 Absalom is snagged by his long hair in tree and executed by Joab in battle between David's men and Absalom's men, David receives news and mourns for Absalom.  

  David mourns Absalom and is rebuked by Joab, king David returns to Jerusalem and re-establishes his kingdom and contacts. 

  Sheba stirs up another revolt against David's kingdom he flees the city is pursued by Joab who kills Amasa en route, Sheba's head is delivered to Joab.

  David delivers seven decendants of Saul to the Gibeonites to be hung to satisfy God's justice because Saul had not kept his oath to them . 

  David sings  to God in thanks for delivering him from his enemies, His power as creator, the rock of his salvation who pours out lovingkingness. 

  David writes a song of praise to God, all of his mighty men warriors are listed and honored including Abishai, Asahel and others.

  David sins and takes a prideful census of the people, God judges (through prophet Gad) with choice of 3 days of pestilence then David builds an altar.

  God establishes a king to rule his people, the people choose Saul , Samuel (God's prophet) anoints David,  there is conflict between them,  David is to be God's conquering representative  

   God equips the kings in the line of David and they fail, The kingdom splits into Israel and Judah, God sends prophets to evaluate kings based on the law .
