Hosea - Harlotry - BIBLE SUMMARY WITH ART

 God tells Hosea to take a wife of harlotry,  Gomer, she conceives Jezreel a son  and another daughter and son,  then God reminds of the promise He made to Israel.

Imagery is used to connect Israelites chasing other gods to the national harlotry soon to be exposed naked, only ultimately to be restored eternally.

Hosea repurchases his adulterous wife with silver as a picture of God  repurchasing His beloved nation in the last days.

God lays out a case against Israel , because Israel has rejected knowledge she will be rejected as God's priest, she has worshipped idols and played the harlot loving shame repeatedly.

Blow the trumpets and sound the alarm the revolters are deep in depravity, God will carry Israel  away and none will deliver her.

 Israel is challenged to return to the Lord,  although unrepentant, God promises to intercede for future reconciliation.  "He will raise us up on the third day".

 God longs to heal Israel but they delight in their own wickedness and sin, their arrogance testifies against them, in peril they turn away from God to other nations and their false gods.

 Israel has broken God's covenant, they worship idols, they sow the wind but will reap the whirlwind, I will send fire upon their cities.

Do not rejoice Israel you have played the harlot  forsaking God, the days of your punishment has come, Ephraim has been planted and uprooted to bear no fruit or childen.

 Until He comes to rain righteousness on you,  you have plowed wickedness, you have reaped injustice, You have eaten the fruit of lies, at dawn the king of Israel will be cut off.

 God called his beloved nation Israel as a youth out of Egypt, taught them to walk but they turned to other gods therefore God will put the sword against them until future reconciliation.

 Ephraim is reminded that God is the God of Israel, be honest and forthright, His angel wrestled with Jacob, there is reproach on the people of Ephraim.

 Ephraim who once glorified God turned to idols,  God  who nurtured and protected them will devour them, the fountain will become dry.

Israels' sin has been its downfall, their only hope is to return to the Lord and ask Him to forgive, if they seek refuge in other nations and gods, God will always judge.

 The prophet Joel sees the swarming locusts and recognizes this as God's judgment, he exhorts his countrymen to mourn, wail, and declare a holy fast .

 The destruction of locusts is compared to the  pending conquering armies, therefore the people need to return to God,  ultimately God will be the just conquerer on the day of the Lord.

 God will  ultimately restore  the rule of his nation  and judge all nations, in the valley of Jehoshaphat.

 Amos a sheepherder proclaims God's judgment on many neighboring nations poetically," for three transgressions of subject nation and for four."

 Israel and Judah are included in the statements of judgment, God makes it clear it was His hand that delivered and caused past hardships.

God's sovereignty over all creation is affirmed with focus on the tribes of Israel ,  "If a calamity occurs in a city has not the Lord done it ".

 Israel has not returned to the Lord, the God who forms the winds and the mountains won't allow Israel to walk away from God and prosper, " I sent plagues among you , as I did to Egypt.

 Israel has fallen,  Amos calls the people of Israel to repentance "Seek the Lord and live", the God who turns midnight to dawn sees the evil and oppression of the poor, the day of the Lord in judgment will come.

 Woe to you who are complacent , you feel secure in the mountains  but the God who created the mountains will not allow your rebellion.

The Lord shows Amos locusts and fire that He is restraining, Priest Amaziah accuses and warns Amos to not prophesize, Amos predicts future exile and destruction for Amaziah.

The Lord shows Amos a basket of ripe fruit and declares that Israel is ripe for judgment,  they have lied and cheated enough, days of famine and judgment are coming.

 Israel's destruction is promised for its sin, but  future reconciliation is guaranteed never again to be uprooted.

 God tells Jonah to preach against Nineveh, he rebels and runs away to Tarshish, en route a great storm comes and Jonah is cast in the sea by the crew  to calm the storm and swallowed by fish. 

 Jonah prays out of distress a sincere desperate prayer  to God for deliverance in the belly of the fish who ended up vomiting Jonah onto dry land after 3 days.

 God speaks to Jonah again and he delivers message of pending judgment in Nineveh, but they believe,  repent and fast in sackcloths and God mercifully relents.

  Jonah recognizes God's compassion to Nineveh and this makes him mad, God sends and removes shade plant to adjust his comfort as illustration of mercy.

 Micah gets the word of God and pronounces Samaria as the judgment on the house of Jacob and the pending desctuction of both.

 God's people have become an enemy to what they were suppose to do,  they are apostate and strip off the robes of passersby (opposite of showing mercy properly). 

 God speaks out against the rulers and false prophets who are seeking their own benefit, they twist everything that is straight.  

 The mountain of Jerusalem will be established where the nations will know God, on that day there,  will be peace, in the meantime they will be exiled in Babylon.

Out of small Bethlehem of Judah will come the ruler, Israel will be abandoned until she bears her son, He will be our Peace and on that day judge the nations.

The Lord has made a case against the nation Israel and she is found guilty, Israel has failed to act justly and love mercy therefore God has begun to destroy her.

 Israel will persist in misery until God, who won't stay angry forever, restores them begins their reconciliation and hurls all their iniquities into the depths of the sea. 

 God told the people through Haggai to rebuild the temple because they had put more effort into their own houses under Zerubbabel in the second year of King Darius.

 God is behind the work of rebuilding the temple and with this His people are holy,  God will make Zerubbabel his signet ring.

 God tells Zechariah during Darius' rule  that the people need to return to Him,  he has vision amongst myrtle trees of one man and four horses that will  judge for God and restore Jerusalem then he throws down four horns.

Zechariah sees an angel sent to measure the city of Jerusalem, God will judge all who stand against Jerusalem.

 An angel shows the prophet a vision where the high priest, Joshua,  is forgiven sins, dressed in clean clothes sitting under fig tree in the future.

 The angel shows the prophet the golden lampstand with an olive tree on each side, which is to represent Zechariah's laying of the foundation of the temple.

He sees a flying scroll and a woman sitting in a basket that represents wickedness carried by two winged women, to be closed and carried to Babylon until future. 

Zechariah sees four different colored horse chariots going to judge  the 4 corners of earth, he is then told to make a gold crown for a priest /king man Joshua to build God's temple

 Zechariah recounts how earlier prophets spoke of God's mercy especially to  widows and orphans but Israel turned their back on them so for this time God is turning His back on Israel.

 God promises future reconciliation for his people in the city of Jerusalem with all the nations coming to pay homage to the God of Israel.

 God pronounces future judgment on the enemies of Israel,  and the coming of Israel's king first on a lowly donkey then like a flash of lightning to save His people.

 From Judah God will bring a  warrior to lead His people to conquer the nations and return to the land.

 God is the good shepherd  to Israel but He is removing Himself to allow the foolish shepherd (leaders of Israel) to rule, God is valued for  thirty pieces of silver thrown to the potter at the house of the Lord.

  Israel's enemies will unite against her but God will step in to save them,  then  "They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child."

 Malachi prophesies that the Edomites are an ongoing demonstration of God's wrath, God is greatly dishonored by using blind or blemished animals for sacrifices.

 The priests are profaning the name of God,  the people are marrying the daughters of foriegn gods and divorcing the wives of their youth dishonoring God.

 God's messenger will come to purify the priesthood, the people have robbed God by not tithing, a book will ultimately judge the wicked separating them from those who fear God.

 Behold a day is coming burning like a furnace where God will judge so remember the law of Moses.
