 The family of Elimelech sojourn for food, his two sons marry women of Moab the three men die and Ruth the widow of one son  is contrasted with the other widow Orpah, Ruth clings to  Naomi and her God as they return to Israel for food . 

 Ruth  gleans in the field of  Boaz who notices Ruth and generously provides for her and Naomi in accordance to provisions for the  poor. widows,  aliens under the Law, he is  of the family of Elimelech. 

Ruth approaches Boaz at night and he promises he will  fulfill his duty as a near  kinsmen redeemer if the nearer redeemer does not (in accordance to the Law)  in spite of Naomi's scheming to manipulate this situation. 

 Ruth is revealed as the line that connects the seed of promise from Perez (Tamar) to David to the benefit of unfaithful Naomi.

  Judges are appointed as God's ordained representatives to rule according to the Law, each seems to  go more downhill as time in the book progresses doing "what is right in their own eyes".  

 God establishes a king to rule his people, the people choose Saul , Samuel (God's prophet) anoints David,  there is conflict between them,  David is to be God's conquering representative.
